FAQs
Why should I join KASA?
Because there's no better shortcut to belonging at a school as large as UCLA. From the moment you join, you become part of a close-knit community with the chance to join a family, where you'll be matched with sunbaes who will guide you through everything from your first quarter to your last job search, and hoobaes you'll one day do the same for. You'll build friendships that outlast your four years here, gain access to a network of mentors and alumni working across nearly every industry, and find a community where being Korean American is not something to explain but something to simply live. Members also gain access to a variety of perks, including UCLA KASA merch, discounts, and more. Whether you come for the events, the mentorship, or the culture, most members find they stay for the people.
Who can join KASA?
Everyone. KASA welcomes students of every background, regardless of race, religion, political belief, gender, or sexual orientation. Many of our members are Korean American, but plenty are not, whether they're Korean adoptees, have Korean family members, or are simply curious about the culture. What matters most is a willingness to show up and be part of the community.
Do I need to speak Korean to join?
Not at all. Members range from fluent Korean speakers to those who know only a handful of words, and everyone in between. All of our events are conducted in English with perhaps a scattering of Korean, making them the perfect place to both grow in your understanding of and enjoy Korean culture.
What is the sunbae-hoobae Family Program?
It's KASA's take on a Korean tradition in which more experienced members, or "bigs," are paired with newer members, or "littles." These small families study, eat, and spend time together throughout the year, and over time they grow into much larger, multi-generational family trees within the organization. It's designed to make a big club feel small from day one.
What kinds of events does KASA host?
Throughout the year, we organize interactive community events, from mixers and game nights to larger gatherings that bring the whole organization together, alongside cultural education events focused on Korean history, traditional games, modern Korean culture, and language. We also offer professional development opportunities, including mentorship and connections to job and internship opportunities through our network of alumni and industry contacts.
When can I join KASA?
New members are welcomed at the start of every academic year, though our events and community are open to students at any point in their time at UCLA. The best way to get involved is to come to one of our events and introduce yourself.
